Yorkshire Office Group’s guide to reducing back pain

Uncomfortable office furniture can lead to a lot of Yorkshire employees having back pain, that’s because not a lot of businesses supply their staff members with quality office chairs.

At Yorkshire Office Group, our office furniture specialists understand how painful back pain can be on a day to day basis, and that’s why we stock an extensive range of orthopaedic chairs at our Wakefield-based office in order to supply businesses with comfortable office seating.

Our orthopaedic chairs are designed to create good posture in individuals who may be sat for a long time, which can help with back problems and prevent any serious damage in the future. What’s more, all of our chairs are endorsed by chiropractor Dr. R Bateman, and are fully adjustable so each person can choose the position and height suited to them.

Once you have one of our specialist orthopaedic chairs, there are steps you can take to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible, and luckily, our office furniture fitters have prepared this quick checklist to help adjust your seat accordingly:

Step one: Elbow measure

Firstly, you need to check that your elbows are at a 90 degree angle with your work surface. To do this, sit in your chair and get into a comfortable position. Then move your chair as close to your office desk as possible so that your upper arms are parallel to your side. If your elbows aren’t at a 90 degree angle when you rest your hands on your work surface then you need to adjust the height of your chair.

Step two: Thigh measure

Check to see if you can slide your fingers under your thigh easily at the end of your chair. If you feel like this is too tight to do, then you need to prop up your feet to avoid back pain, do this with an adjustable footrest. If you’re tall, then chances are you need to raise your office desk so you can raise the height of your chair.

Step three: Calf measure

Push your body against your chair back and then try and pass your clenched fist between the back of your calf and the front of your chair. If you are struggling to do this then it could be that your office chair is too deep. To change this all you need to do is adjust the backrest.

Step four: Low back support

It is the lower back where many Yorkshire employees will feel pain, so ensuring you are sat comfortably is crucial. Again, press against the back of your office chair so that your lower back arches slightly due to the cushion in the chair. Ensure you sit like this all day and try not to slump forward.
