Nuffield Health has revealed that over a quarter of Britain’s – estimated to be around six million people - are suffering from debilitating lower back pain but have not been diagnosed for their symptoms.
Back pain can lead to anxiety, depression, and time off work, Nuffield said. With the staggering figure of back pain coming from poor guidance from doctors and an inactive lifestyle from sitting at office desks all day, leading to painful symptoms.
The research, which asked 3,322 people across the country questions relating to back pain, found the following results:
- 27% of people had never been diagnosed and do not understand why they have back pain or how it could be treated.
- Half of those with pain have been told that a referral to a spinal specialist is pointless as there is no treatment for back pain.
- 35% of people haven’t had access to any form of diagnostic scan, with over half of people asked self-diagnosing themselves from internet sites to improve pain.
